Apprenticeships

An apprenticeship is generally related to a trade and has a longer training period than a traineeship.

Upon completion of an apprenticeship at Central you will become a qualified tradesperson.

At Central apprenticeships are available in printing, jewellery, optics and dental.

Traineeships

With a traineeship you can learn new skills and get a nationally recognised qualification while you are working.

To be a trainee you must firstly be employed and discuss the option of a traineeship with your employer. Trainees enter into a contract with an employer to gain hands-on skills and work experience while earning a wage.

Traineeships are usually in non-trade related areas and last for 12 months or more.

Eligibility for a traineeship is based on factors such as how long you've been employed with your company and your previous qualifications.

Employers make the initial phonecall and application for the traineeship on behalf of the employee. Once initial discussion are complete the employer and employee enter into a contract with the Registered Training Organisation.

Types of traineeships

 Work based

Existing worker traineeships

If you've been working with the same employer for more than three months full-time or 12 months part-time you might be eligible for an existing worker traineeship and government incentives.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

If you are already competent in your workplace role you can have your skills recognised through a ‘Recognition of Prior Learning’ (RPL) process.

Flexible training

If the course you want to study isn't registered as a traineeship, or if your employee is ineligible for an official traineeship, Central may still be able to accommodate you. We deliver many of our on campus courses in the workplace for the same price as a traineeship.

 School based

School based training will give students the opportunity to start employment based training while completing Year 11 and 12. You can  then work towards secondary graduation and get an industry recognised qualification.
To be a school based trainee you must:
  • be at least 15 years old
  • be a full-time senior secondary student in Year 11 or 12
  • enter into a training contract with an employer to complete a  traineeship
  • have your school's agreement to undertake a school based traineeship
  • have completed units of competency of your traineeship included on your Western Australian Certificate of Education.

Duration

Students entering into a school based traineeship will sign up for a nominal duration period of 1 ½ years. If you decide to start a school based traineeship remember you are committing yourself to completing the full duration of the training.

Commencement date

You can start a school based traineeship at any time throughout Year 11 or 12. We recommend you begin at the start of Year 11 to ensure you complete it in time to count towards your WACE and secondary graduation.

Qualification level

School based traineeships commence at Certificate II and can lead into a Certificate III.

You need the approval of your school and parents or guardian.
