Studying: Diploma of Events
What does studying events encompass?
Managing sponsorship, project management, business plan writing, marketing and operational strategies.
What drew you to that field?
I have had a passion for it since high school. I worked at the Hyatt for two years in the banquets department setting up and packing down functions and general assistance within the venue doing cleaning, tidying and helping team leaders. This led me to want to make it my career.
What do you like about studying in the city?
It’s close to everything, and easy to get to. Going to bars, cafes and shopping. It’s central, so it’s easy for people to access.
Can you tell us about some of the events work you've done as a part of your course?
I worked at the Powderfinger concert doing wristbands and helping security. I also did an international conference that came to Perth last year doing registration and general venue assistance. I organised the 2010 Melbourne Cup at the Art Gallery. I was the events manager which meant I had to book venue, manage logistics, setting up, working out placements of furniture and props, and looking after food and beverages.
What would your dream job be?
I would like to become an Events Producer, working on corporate functions. Starting with small functions, and then working my way up to awards evenings and international conferences.
