About the course

This course is an introduction to the Adobe InDesign publishing program. The program allows the user to layout text and images in a format that is appropriate to send to a professional printer or just for use at home/office to create brochures and flyers. This course is suitable for people working in a professional setting as well as for students. This course is taught on Apple computers, basic knowledge of Macs is an advantage but not essential. Adobe Illustrator can be used on a PC or Apple computer.

Week 1 - Toolbox, control palettes, master keys, shortcuts, working area, creating a new document, margins & columns, bleed, slug, overview of formatting text tools
Week 2 - Adding text, text frames and linked text, placing text, printing documents, text frame options, editing text, specifying type, aligning type, improving layout with type, Legibility factors, laying out a business card, pathfinder palette, Putting it into practice exercise
Week 3 - Borders & strokes, using the swatch palette, colour palette, adding colour, basic layers, grouping, bleed areas, placing graphics, scaling graphics
Week 4 - Text wrap, putting it into practice exercise, A4 typographic exercise
Week 5 - Tabulation, linking and columns activity, in class tabulation exercise, aligning items/graphics
Week 6 - In class exercise : Recreating a page incorporating graphics, text, colour fills, tinting, gradients, rotation
